Garie Beach

How do you catch sharks off the beach? ( In North Carolina specifically )?

I surf fish alot, but I've heard you can catch spinners and blacktip sharks right off the beach as well. Just trying to learn how to do it for next time I go fishing.

  1. I suppose a shark is a shark whether it be in N. Carolina or Florida.but I had a friend in Florida who fished for sharks for 50 years. he was an old black guy and an expert at ocean fishing. he of course had a salt water rig, but he would take a gallon plastic milk jug, put about 2 inches of water in it, tie his line to that. then tie another 8 foot of line to the jug,he used an entire Chicken for bait, he would cast it out as far as he could and let the waves and tide wash the jug out to sea. the old man never failed. he lived in Vero Beach Florida. he was something to watch.
  2. You did not say which part of NC coast..The outer banks, (Corolla to Cape Lookout) just find a deep slough, and locate the break in the bar....Use a fish finder rig, with a three foot wire leader, and 7/0 hook baited with a large portion of fresh mullet....I have caught many on mullet....Shark fishing is better at night....If you put your rod in a sand spike, loosen the drag so the fish can take line...The strike will be violent, and if you turn your back, you will watch your rod get dragged into the ocean....I have caught a lot of sharks while fishing at night for Red Drum....In the Avon area of the "banks" you will probably catch 50/50 sharks and Drum......And please be careful releasing them...A shark can almost turn and bite his own tail....A good sized shark can knock you down with his tail, and turn on you with his business end in an instant....
