Is a Whitsundays Island Cruise/Dive just as amazing as a Great Barrier Reef (Bait Reef) Cruise/Dive?

Hi There, We are looking to go to the Great Barrier Reef / Airlie Beach in Oct. Just trying to organise a cruise/dive. We are thinking of going for 2days/2nights and we have a choice between a fast new boat around the Whitsundays or an older boat that will go out to Bait Reef (Outer Great Barrier Reef). Id love to know other peoples opinion on what kind of cruise/dive they experienced as I can't decide! Thank you

1. I'd say do the whitsundays. When i did the great barrier reef if was just a load of big boats going out to the same location, and there had been so many people there most of the coral was dead and grey not as lovely as i had expected. where as the whitsundays there are so many beautiful islands and i saw so many more fish, lizards, sea turtles! the boats were a lot nicer too, the barier reef one's were just a big people carriers but for the whitsundays there are loads of old beautiful boats.
2. sail/cruise the whitsundays is better than the outer reef. lot of boats with small numbers rather than cattle boats that cram them in. enjoy!
