What are the best beaches to visit in South Carolina?

A friend and I will be spending three days travelling in South Carolina starting August 1st. We were thinking of spending a night in or near Myrtle Beach and then heading south to Charleston. I'd love to spend a lot of time at different beaches and I especially love collecting sea shells. Any recommendations for clean, not-too-crowded, shell-filled beaches in the area? Many thanks!

1. Myrtle Beach is very nice. I stayed there about 15 years ago. You may also visit the Grand Strand while your there as well. Things could be a little expensive and crowded there since the summer is a popular time. Could you visit at another time?
