Is it true some of the doors at beach resorts/guest houses in SE Asia do not have locks?
I am working out what to pack/not pack and I am curious to know how safe the accomodations around Thailand and Vietnam are. We will be staying in a mixture of places, guest houses, bunglows, budget hotels and I have heard some of the beach resorts just have swing doors on the rooms and no locks, does anyone have experience in this and can lend some tips? Are there any types of places to avoid and how would I know this when booking online?

- Some very cheap places might not have locks but will usually have a clasp fitted so you can put your own pad lock on. You will not find a place on line that does not have a lock. I had some back packers staying at my house in Thailand and they had been living cheap in India befor reaching Thailand and one of them was carrying a lap top with him and an expensive mobile phone (with GPS ) as well as a digital camera, with no trouble I live in Thailand and though no where near the tourist centers, you only have to see what Thai people leave unattended in their pick up trucks at shopping centers to attest to their honesty, they obviously dont worry about thieves. Just take the same precautions that you would at home. You will enjoy Thailand
- yes - there is enuf theft that you should be careful whether the theft comes from Thai or backpackers won't matter much if your stuff is gone - have not seen any place w/no locks - have seen places where the maid might steal - Take necessary precautions - keep your passport and money with you or in a safe - and then enjoy in comfort
- only the super super cheap places might like this , but all the hotels from 3star to5(the 3stars in thailand are really cheap) and many guest houses have lock but seriously it depends on the area you're going.
