Garie Beach

What are Americas best beaches & how do they compare to Australias Beaches, are they any good?

Australia is surrounded by coastline & our Cities are surrounded by beaches, in Sydney every 5 minutes theres a great beach around the corner. The best are probably in Queenslans though, the Sunshine Coast & Surfers Paradise maybe. How do American beaches rate? I've been to Long Beah California & was dissapointed, been to Hermosa Beach, very dissapointed & Santa Monica, like wise...? Why?

  1. Theres a reason why surfing is your national sport. Good on ya.
  2. Go south mate Cardiff,Encinitas, Carlsbad, Leucadia great surf spots and not much wind, the beaches suck in LA Ol Ca surfer
  3. Well aside from Hawaii......... Southern California offers the most consistent waves on the Continental US. In California, the air and water temperature never get as cold as it does on most of the east coast in the winter. However, because there is no warming 'Gulf Stream' in the Pacific, the water never gets really warm on California in the summer, when the air is at it's warmest. Lots of California beaches are either crowded, or polluted (because of river run-offs or oil drilling, or urban waste). And as beauitiful as lots are, I can see why you have some criticisms of them (lots of homeless dudes in Santa Monica around the pier...but then again, what a beautiful place to live on the beach). Much of the east coast is great, in the summer (from New York to Virginia). But ALL east coast surfing gets very 'fickle' come Summer, and you can never tell when there will be waves, or when there will total, flat, nothing. South Carolina and Florida (there is NO surf in Georgia) have some good, year round surfing, and if you find the 'secret spots' both the beaches and the beach towns are very cool. But, you have to know where to go. The tourist trap towns all SUCK, but that is the way of the world. I love surfing in the US, and unfortunately I haven't set foot on Australia since the early 70s. I have a special affection for Australia, you guys were our best allies in Vietnam. However, surfing is a much more 'main stream' sport for you guys, because so much of your population is located on coasts with surfable beaches, unlike us. If you ever come to the US during our Spring, Summer or Fall (about March through November) I can give you some great spots. But obviously, I wouldn't do that on line. There is a reason why they call them ;'secret spots'.
