Garie Beach

How frequent are Shark attacks & sightings in America, compared to Australia?

Just wondering if US beaches are often closed due to Shark attacks or Shark sightings, we have a pretty high shark population in Australian waters, recently a Navy Diver was attacked in Sydney Harbour & lost a leg & arm, a Tourist was attacked while surving at Bondi Beach & it seems every year someone is attacked in Western Australian waters or in Queensland waters by a Great White. I don't think its as bad here as it in off Cape Town, South Africa, but what about the USA?

  1. This can explain it better than I can. http://swimatyourownrisk.com/2007/05/20/the-worlds-most-shark-infested-beaches/
  2. Brother, there are sharks in EVERY ocean of the world. For years, I was an avid shark fisherman, and at night, I often fished the same beaches I surfed during the day. I gave up shark fishing as a professional courtesy, I won't eat them if they don't eat me. Most of our Great White sightings are in California, and New York (Long Island) and up to New England. We don't have the same food supply for them as you guys do. Florida has a huge and varied shark population, including the very nasty Bull shark, and they probably have our biggest number of shark attacks. I'll attach a link that has very accurate statistics. http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Sharks/ISAF/ISAF.htm
