Why should we save the Great Barrier Reef?

Im doing a debate at school, and i need to know reasons why. We are debating issues related to the imprtance of protecting the coral reef.

  1. The Great Barrier reef helped create life on Earth as we know it helping to produce oxygen from the coral which later help evolve plant and animals to the land. The reef is connected to the air and Earth and is a delicate ecosystem that is slowing decaying with consequences negative to the environment. Coral helps with the filtering of wastes and also gives off food for animals and other plants. The reefs promote diversity of life in the ocean and life itself. Good luck with your debate.
  2. Cos it's pretty.. Also because a) it supports marine life that is distinct to that area, destroying it would lead to a catastrophic loss of biodiversity and b) because it's vitally important to Australia's tourism industry and thus our economy
  3. It is one of the most unique living organisms in the world & home to a treasure of marine life ....reason enough to protect it at all costs !
