Help!! Young couple moving to Sydney from uk?

Hi, Me n my boyfriend are moving to Sydney n aug, we're both mid 20s with no major commitments, so looking to have the time of our lives. We were originally considering moving to Melbourne due to my career, ladieswear designer but have been since recommended that Sydney is Auz's fashion district. We're looking for a pretty, trendy sort of area, nice restaurants, shops with night life at a stones throw. Kinda metropolitan feel. We also really like the idea of living near the beach but keep getting told to avoid Bondi n Coogee as they heavily geared towards tourists and are a bit tacky.... Is this true? We're completely open to any suggestions cos at the minute we're very confused...Help!

  1. Sydney is by far the bigger city but Melbourne is actually Australia's premier city. Melbourne's food trends are way more stylish, why even Gordon Ramsey is opening a restaurant there. I live in Adelaide and would travel to Melbourne at least a dozen times a yr and maybe Sydney once. I find the shopping and nightlife is better there. Sydney is very tourism orientated sure everything is bigger and brighter but you have to take into consideration the population. Which to me makes Melbourne the premier city. You have the very trendy Toorak with Chapel St. then there is the cosmopolitan St. Kilda with its chic bars and nightspots and Melbourne's Crown Casino Complex with its countless bars, nightspots, eateries and coteries . Melbourne is home to Australia's national sport AFL and Sydney is big on Rugby. They both have there pluses and minuses so hope you enjoy whatever you choose. Any other questions don't hesitate to drop me a line. Cheers David
  2. I live in Sydney and love it, but I would definitely agree that Melbourne is much more a cosmopolitan city. In my opinion, Sydney is more about beaches and outdoor activity whereas Melbourne is a more arty 'cafe society'. I would also say that Melbourne is better known for it's dining and fashion scene. Hope this helps!
  3. Well I don't agree with either of the first two answers! Melbourne dies at sundown according to people who visit there, whereas Sydney is a vibrant living city 24 hrs a day. Living in the Northern suburbs such as Manly, Chatswood,Lane Cove & Mosman is good & close to the coast. Manly especially.
  4. I think either Sydney or Melbourne are good places For Sydney I would suggest The Rocks, Balmain, Surry Hills, Newton, Paddington, Darlinghurst anywhere on Oxford St is really trendy and up-coming I think Bondi is quite plesant, maybe a little bit touristy and less artsy, but it's a stones throw from everywhere, while still having a beautiful coastal scene Manly is also a really nice area, close to the city Hope this helps ! You will really enjoy Sydney, there are many places that reflect the arty metropolitan feel you are after, while still having the friendly and laidback Aussie vibe
  5. I live on the northern beaches and Manly or Freshwater are great beaches. Manly is very trendy. Suburbs round there are Manly Vale, Frenches Forest, Allambie Heights, Seaforth and Curl Curl. They are all great places to live. hope this helps. xx
  6. Sydney is awesome! Bondi and Coogee are quite touristy. I think Cronulla would be great, there are heaps of beaches, tonnes of restaurants and only a very short drive to the city. You would probably work in the city and you just have to catch one train as its on the same line. North Shore is also good, Manly, Chatswood etc, quite metropolitan but I just think Cronulla is so laid back and relaxed. Cronulla is cheaper to live in too. Cronulla is really close to Wesfield Miranda, a huge shopping centre! Type Sutherland Shire into google. Cronulla is in the Sutherland Shire, there are many other great suburbs in the Sutherland Shire too (over here we just call it "The Shire"). Hope you find somewhere you like, Sydney will welcome you with open arms!
