Is it legal to sleep on the beach in North Carolina?

I plan to take a trip to North Carolina when I turn 18 and spend a few nights on the beach. I have been to North Carolina before but never slept on the beach. Is it legal to sleep on the beach in North Carolina? It is just less money spent for me. Thanks!
