I need beach information for Turks and Caicos?

Our cruise ship will be stopping at Grand Turks in the Turks and Caicos Islands and I would like to know whether I can walk to a good beach from the pier; or should/must I book a tour or taxi to get to a beach? Which is the best beach to visit on Grand Turks if you are there from a cruise ship? What activities are available at and/or near the pier?

1. I just got back from Grand Turk, there is a beach area available right off the pier where the cruise ships dock. There are some small shops right off the pier but it is very touristy. There wasn't much else there thought, most of the island is still without power from Hurricane Ike
2. When you get off the ship, there is a beach area right there along with a Jimmy Buffet's bar and a few shops. Not much else to do on that island. They do have a few dive shops in 'town' the diving is fantastic there. A few people said they enjoyed the dune buggy tour there.
