How can I make an 'Australian house on the beach' out of sweet treats?
When I asked a friend what he'd like for his birthday, he said nothing, then jokingly added that he'd like a house on the beach in Australia. Gingerbread houses are in season, but what kind of edible decors should I add to make it seem more "Australian"?

- When I made a cake, beach scene, I used the cake scraps to make sand. I did this by crumbling them and baking them so the were crunchy. Then putting frosting down and the crubs adhere to it.
- uhm...all the people I know in Australia might as well be in the US. They sound alike and have the same kind of houses and cars and clothes. Why don't you go to google images and put that in as a search term and find a real house. Then you can give him a picture and the house. (if it was me I'd print off a copy of a "reflection" in the glass and put it in the windows of the house, so it reflects the beach) Good luck oh...you might also try going to the World Market (or a gourmet food store) andbuying some Astralian candy. They have specialized cadbury candies there, and also special cookies.
- a beach scene! how cute... im thinking instead of a regular snow base, sprinkle down some brown sugar for sand. the house can be like a beach hut - not saying australians live in huts obviously, but its very tropical. maybe some shredded wheat for a thatched roof, or pretzel sticks for a cabin type feel. maybe make a bonfire on the beach - use liquorice sticks for firewood and candy corn upside down for flames. something that looks like surfboards as window ledges, maybe a hammock between some trees. royal icing tinted blue would make nice ocean waves...make a good amount and you'll be able to swirl it. then you can put little candy fish or blue whales in the water!
