- depends who is in government and who make s a lot of noise generally not much
- seriously, the only way to really save the reef is to keep people, fishing boats and everything else off of it!!! as a local (i grew up in Cairns...lived there from 1985-2006) you couldnt imagine the damage that has been done to the reef in the past 20 years...unless you have seen it for yourself. a reef trip was a monthly thing when i was a kid...either out to one of the cays, Green or Fitzroy Island, out with Sunlover or Quicksilver or just out on my dads or friends boats the reef was beautiful, you could snorkel off the islands and see the most beautiful coral outcrops, loads of fish and everything else...now there is nothing! even the trips to the outer reef changed once the big companies built their pontoons and started taking 1000's of people out there on a daily basis... my point is that the tourists are killing the reef. countless times i have told tourists..."get of the coral" as they stand on it and break off pieces... once you break a piece off live coral...it dies! i went back in July of this year and took a reef trip..oh the disappointment, its so gray and dismal that i was in tears. i would be happy not to go out there again if it meant that it was saved!!!!
