Best place to stay in the Great Barrier Reef?

My husband and I are planning to visit the great barrier reef for 4-5 days at the beginning of September and wanted to check what is the best area/island to stay on for beautiful beaches, ample snorkeling and other water activities?

2. Green Island and Fitzroy Island - both located off Cairns are lovely - my personal prefferance would be Fitzroy.
3. dunk island. green island. if you do not want to stay on an island port douglas and palm cove are extremly nice with great beaches. if you choose not to stay at on an island there are alot of great day trips you can take.
4. my cousin had a vacation there and as far as i can remember, he stayed in Cairns at a hotel named sheridan plaza. You might want to check out their website. Said he had a fine time because there were lots of activities he experienced. see this: http://www.sheridanplaza.com.au/specials.php
