1. There are public camping spots all along the South California coastline. There are also several places that do *not* allow camping. Here's a site I found that lists some places that do allow camping: http://www.daytrippen.com/southern-california-beach-camping.html ...or google "southern california beach camping". You'll get a list of several good sites to visit.
2. Most camp sites are not on the beaches. some are on cliffs and others are across the roads from the beach. they are all nice most are already booked for the summer they fill 3-6 months in advance. if you are military there are a couple on the beach/base. nice too!
