Is it illegal to camp on the beach in Texas?

I dont know which beach we are going to, but we want to camp out for July 4 on the beach. Is this illegal? Also, do you think it would be ok to drive my 4runner on the sand? i just got it..so im not used to all its quirks yet..thanks :)
