best ~ closest beaches in Texas?

We have recently moved to Houston, we would like to visit the beach. What beaches do you recommend? Please consider distance and quality. Thank you.

3. There is Galveston, but it gets incredibly crowded. You might head for the west end of Galveston where it is a little more open. Take I-45 south until the end to get to Galveston Island. Other options from Galveston. From the northeast end, take the Bolivar Ferry to the Bolivar Peninsula. There are beaches at Port Bolivar and the eponymous Crystal Beach. From the southwest end, take the bridge over the San Luis Pass (pronounced San Louie) and continue down to Surfside. You can get to Surfside from Houston without going to Galveston. Go down 288 to Freeport and then bear left onto FM 332.
4. Galveston is 1 hour away but i think its just so nasty South Padre Island is 5-6 hours away, its a lot better.
5. Galveston is like 45 minutes away and plus there is a waterpark (Schlitterbahn) there... have fun..
