- Nope, the closest beach is Galveston and it's about 3 hrs from college station. And if you go, the only good place to surf is Surfside which is about 3.5 hr. from College Station. Head South onto HWY. 290 and east towards Houston then take I-45 down to Galveston.
- Head down highway 6 until you can take 290 toward Houston. Take 610 east to 45 south. Take 45 south to Galveston. It will be about 3 to 3 1/2 hours as stated above. Is it good for surfing. That depends on what you are used to. I see surfers there all the time, but if you are used to California or Hawaii waves, you will be very disappointed.
- Texas A&M-Galveston is on the island of Galveston. While many in Galveston proclaim to be surfers, the surfing action there is poor. Rarely, it is surfable, usually due to tropical storm activity. Something to look into that is unique in the surfing world and exists in Galveston Bay is wake surfing. When large ships navigate the stretch of the Houston ship channel near Galveston, their wake rolls over shallower water creating a very long, rolling wave that lasts for quite a considerable distance. Imagine surfing a wave that lasts for ten or fifteen minutes. The wave is not very tall but is very surfable and very long. The surfers are taken out to the area in a bay boat and when a ship is creating the right type of wake, the surfers go for it. I have no firsthand knowledge of this but saw it in a newspaper article in the local Galveston paper and on a news story from a TV station out of Houston. It appears that this is known to some surfers worldwide and they will come to Galveston just for this. As TX A&M- Galveston is big on all things marine related, I'm sure some students there have to know about this. Perhaps you can chat on-line with the Aggies there and find more information on this. From what I saw and read, this looked very cool. To help you visualize the Texas coast, the further south you go down the coast, the nicer the water. Corpus Christi on down to Padre Island has prettier water and better wave action than on the upper Texas coast, such as Galveston, Surfside, or Bolivar peninsula. To get to Galveston Island from College Station, take Highway 6 to 290, head for Houston. Take the Beltway 8 (Sam Houston) toll road south until you hit I-45. Head south all the way to Galveston. Or stay on 290 to the 610 Loop north, 610 loop north to I-45. I-45 south to Galveston. This will save 4-5 dollars in tolls but traffic is tougher.
