Garie Beach

What restaurants, attractions, and activities are in walking distance from Beaches resort in Turks and Caicos?

My husband and I are going there for our honeymoon in April. I know the snorkeling is supposed to be good but what else is there to do nearby that we can walk to, not have to pay inflated resort prices for, and maybe even get a taste of the actual islands?

  1. Beaches Resort is an all-inclusive resort, located on the best beach Grace Bay Beach. The resort is located near Coral Gardens and in front of that hotel is a very healthy coral reef that is wonderful to snorkel. You can walk to this reef. Not much happening on Provo besides the white sand beach and beautiful aqua color water. Most people go there for the beach. The beach is very walkable and you will enjoy seeing all the resorts lined up on the beach. Some very good dining in some of those resorts, Sibonne Resort (Bay Bistro Rest),The Sands (Hemingway's on the Beach Rest) to name a few. A good site for info http://www.wherewhenhow.com The awe of this island is all in the water. A must do is a water excursion. A couple of different excursions. My favorite charter company. Located in front of the Alexander Resort. They have a booth there and take credit cards. http://www.caicosdreamtours.com If you want to see more of the island, I suggest you rent a jeep. They do have a gecko bus to get around but, it's on island time. Good luck and enjoy. TCI is one of my favorite beach destinations. You will have a wonderful honeymoon)
  2. Look at this link, showing the route taken by the Gecko shuttle bus. This will get your around the main tourist areas economically. http://www.thegecko.tc/route.htm Beaches is all inclusive, so you don't want to spend money on restaurants, but you could try having a drink at Danny Buoys or the Shark Bite and perhaps an ice cream at one of the ice cream bars near Salt Mills. Our favourite restaurants are Simba and Iguana, which are both reasonably priced. The ultimate in glamour (and expense) would be Anacaona, which is ruinously expensive but which is said (by those who can afford it) to be superb. For an extra payment there is just one table set out on the beach for evening dining. I imagine that it has to be booked well in advance. You'll find that it is just as easy to get from place to place by strolling down the beach. I would advise that for the first half mile or so, as there is an area down the road from Beaches, before you hit the main tourist drag, which doesn't look safe for walking in if you are a foreigner. Most places of interest you would get to by turning right on the beach from Beaches. You might want to try the new ferry which travels to and from North Caicos each day from Leeward -- those who have are raving about it. If you do rent a car, try to get to Malcolm Beach and Chalk Sound, which are local beauty spots, taking in a quick visit to the old plantation at Cheshire Hall on the way. You will need a four wheel drive for Malcolm Beach. They are making an effort at Bluehills with some new tourist attractions -- small shops, etc. The views from Bluehills (the first settled part of the island) are superlative. If they had a beach there, it would no doubt be full of resorts, instead of the run down area it in fact is. http://www.turksandcaicostourism.com/go/en/activities-providenciales--page--3--next--1.html
