Has anyone been to texas beaches recently? Im wondering how the water is around padre island, and how the beaches are?

Are there any good beaches in Texas? That are at most a 4 hr drive from Houston? I prefer a beach with pretty sand and clear water. Been to Galveston-sand is littered with dead seaweed and gray water. Corpus Christi & Padre Island-pretty sand, but the water is dark blue at best.

I've been to Galveston prior to Hurricane Ike and I thought that the beaches were AWFUL ... muddy water, lots of trash, and packed with RUDE and OBNOXIOUS day-trippers from Houston. Beaches in TEXAS lots of q's? First off im from New Mexico so i do not know Texas very well. I know Austin is not on the coast. the way i see it is that Port Lavaca is the closest beach city from Austin. maybe im wrong. Would Corpus Christi be worth the little bit extra drive? If there are any other ones you want to add, please go ahead. And by the way, I'm not from Texas, I'm from Kentucky, but I'm saving up so I can get down there as fast as freakin' possible.
