Manly Beach Australia Knowledge Base

Where are the best places to stay in Manly and Manly Beach, New South Wales, Australia? We are traveling to NSW in a few weeks and we would like to stay at, or on, a good surf beach near Sydney. I have heard good things about Manly but I am unsure about the accomodations. We are low-key visitors who prefer to stay away from the tourist traps and just enjoy the local lifestyle. Any suggestions or advice about places to stay in Manly would be greatly appreciated. [And, if you've any input on fave places to stay in Sydney, I'd love to read it]. Thanks for your Answers!
How much does it cost to live in Manly Beach? I am planning to move to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa to live and work there for one year in 2012. I am hoping to live in Manly Beach, or one of the other beach areas nearby (NSW). I am a 26 yr old American female from California and am used to the beach life, and Manly seems like the place for me. I'm used to paying about $700-$800 USD a month ($175-$200 USD a week) where I live now. But I will be on a tight budget, at least at first, since I have no idea how much I will be making, or where I will be working for that matter! I'm not worried about living in a small place or sharing an apartment/ house with others, I'm just curious how much I will need to be making in order to afford to live in this area. Could I have a restaurant type job (waitress/bartender) and afford to live here? Is it more expensive during the summer/peak season? Also if you have any info about where to find a place to rent/stay, and where to find a part-time job, please let me know! Thanks so much!!!!
Is Australia REALLY that much better looking, feeling, and like a paradise ? specifically manly beach.. or the golden coast.. are the pictures overrated ? could there be somewhere similar or better found within the US ? thanks :)

Poll : How dumb can people get... ? ? Found this article on the net _________________________ Melbourne, Nov 10 (ANI): Travel agents are known for arranging proper traveling for people, but the complaints attended by them will make us witness the funny or may be the sad side of their work. Travel specialists from around the world have now compiled a list of the most bizarre complaints by travelers, who can go to any extent to get compensation. One travel agent received a complaint from a tourist at a top African game lodge overlooking a waterhole, who spotted a visibly aroused elephant and complained that the sight of this rampant beast ruined his honeymoon by making him feel "inadequate". Another wacky complaint had a group of UFO-believers, who were holding a conference at a Novotel hotel, express their fears of being infiltrated by aliens because the locks on the meeting room doors had not been changed. There was also a complaint filed by a guest at a Novotel in Australia who complained his soup was too thick and strong. He was inadvertently slurping the gravy at the time. Another Aussie hotel was told by a football star that his hotel room overlooking Sydney's Manly beach was unsuitable because the sound of the sea kept him awake. "By and large, Australians are pretty relaxed about travel and don't make many strange complaints or demands," News.com.au quoted Flight Centre spokesman Haydn Long, as saying. "They're mostly good travellers who understand that things may be done differently to what they'd expect in Australia," he added. But that did not stop one Aussie traveller from cribbing that his hotel room "was decorated in a feminine manner". Other complaints included a panic-stricken dumb woman who called reception and angrily protested that she was locked in her room. Staff later discovered that the woman, who had never stayed in a hotel before, had read the "do not disturb" sign on the inside doorknob and assumed she should not open it. According to one British travel company's survey, some travellers complained of not enjoying going away on holiday because foreigners "didn't want to speak English". ____________________________________ Star if you think its funny
Other than Sydney- Which cities Down Under are a must-see for tourists? Hey everyone. I’m an American citizen living in New York City. Last month, I went on my very first trip to Australia. I traveled to Sydney for four days in order to see the U2 concerts at ANZ Stadium. The problem is that I didn’t get in as much sightseeing as I had hoped. I completely missed out on Manly Beach and Hyde Park. Also, I didn’t get the full Opera House experience due to Oprah Mania. I’m seriously thinking about returning to Sydney this spring, in order to catch the sights that I missed. This time, however, I’d like to swing by other cities Down Under as well while I’m there. I'm particularly interested in visiting the following cities: Auckland Melbourne Gold Coast Sydney (again) Tentatively, my current plan is to do the following: 1) fly from LAX to Auckland 2) fly from Auckland to Melbourne 3) fly from Melbourne to the Gold Coast 4) fly from the Gold Coast to Sydney 5) fly from Sydney back to LAX In Auckland, I only want to see its harbour and One Tree Hill. In Melbourne, I only want to see Melbourne Park and Docklands. On the Gold Coast, I only want to see Surfers Paradise. And in Sydney, I only want to see Manly Beach, Hyde Park, and the Opera House. However, I'm kind of on a budget. And doing all that flying, staying at various hotels, and taking various public transportation is going to require A LOT of money. So I'm pretty much in a quandary. I want to experience the most out of Down Under with this city-hopping adventure....Yet I need to budget myself. For the record, I'm willing to skip Auckland if its surroundings are no different from those of the Sydney Harbour. And I'm willing to take a pass on the Gold Coast if it’s no different from Bondi Beach. However, I'd really like to visit Melbourne and to re-visit Sydney. I was wondering what you Aussies and Kiwis think I should do. Should I even bother with Auckland and the Gold Coast? Thanks for your input guys.

Sydney Northern Beaches that allow dogs? Are there any Northern Beaches in Sydney, Australia that allow dogs? Preferably around Manly? And what are some parks around Manly that allow dogs to run around 'off leash'? thankyouuuu! :)
How much excess did you pay going private??? (Australia)? My hubby & I have been TTC for the past 11 months & before we started we discussed getting private health cover for the birth etc. & decided against it as 2 of my friends had given birth at our local hospital & had good experiences however I recently had a miscarriage & had to have the D&C at our local hospital (it's the best out of the 2 around our area) & had the most horrible horrible experience (very very long story) anyway now we're trying to decide if we should get private cover or not... I've heard that it ends up being really really expensive like $5,000 - $10,000 & that's allot of money when we're also going to be paying $250 p/month for the health insurance itself!!! So I just want to get some opinions & an idea on how much it costs everyone & what your experiences have been (I'm on the Northern Beaches in Sydney so my local hospitals are Mona Vale & Manly).... any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why are some Americans so weird? I am not saying this to offend Americans or make other countries look better but you have to admit, they are really weird. Now I travel a lot and I could understand a country having a different culture, that's no problem. A lot of cultures are fun, sane and have a close relation to the culture we have in England. For instance, when I went to Trinidad it was similar to being back home since they played cricket, soccer, used the word 'bonnet' and 'biscuit', transsexuals and gays weren't on the prowl in broad daylight....etc. There are alot of Indians there so I got introduced to their culture, so when I visited Pakistan last year I already knew what to expect; and I had a blast as well. I just moved to the USA to start the fall semester at UOM since I got a scholarship to go there. I must say that I have seen some disturbing stuff since I landed in this country. Its so bad that in order for me to keep my sanity I usually hang out with the one international student from Australia in my bio class and I also hang out out with Indian, Caribbean and African immigrants. They have to be the sanest people here and without them I would have just packed up and come home because of depression. Anyway just let me list a few things that I saw on a daily basis 1) Transsexuals- I dont really have a problem with these people but for some reason in the US they actually act like women in broad daylight. They would be in the cafeteria, University center, at our games....etc. And the sad part about it is that some look EXACTLY like or even better than some women so that just makes me paranoid since I dont know who to talk to. I actually thought one was a female until my friend Tom (bloke from Australia) told me that he was a guy. 2) TOO MANY gay guys on the low- caught one watching my butt once and it just felt awkward....I guess I am homophobic, plus I was never really exposed to that in the small city whee I am from; nor the other countries I visited 3) How do they not know what cricket is??????? Its only a sport played by mostly ALL other countries!...smh 4) Too Many tomboys- On my trip to NY they were EVERYWHERE. I swear they had on durags (wave caps), baggy pants, manly haircuts and they use this device that straps down their breast to make their chest look flat. And once again, they are seen in broad daylight like its the norm. 5) there is also this trend going on here where a threesome is the next big thing- A girl once told me that she wont sleep with me unless she gets to bring her 'bestie'. Turned out her 'bestie' was a guy, as soon as I heard that I gave up all hope on Americans. Their culture is so weird that you never know what the hell is going on and it seems like you live in a freak show. At least when I am in Jamaica I could be 99% sure that I wont find a gay or transsexual person on the beach in broad daylight! And a Jamaican woman SURE as hell wouldn't expect me to have sex with the man friend. So tell me this, is it just me? Or is America just really weird and different from the rest of the world? Its to the point where every time I meet an immigrant or someone from my country I automatically start bonding with them. And they also get happy when they see me too....so that just goes to show that I am not the only one who stays away from these weird Americans while getting an education here.
